Large Stainless Steel Shaving Soap Bowl from Super Safety Razors Review

Large Stainless Steel Shaving Soap Bowl from Super Safety Razors
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very nice, elegant soap lathering bowl. I think the price is good. The bowl isn't high quality but it is good quality and a nice addition to your shaving kit. In the bowl I see four tack weld marks covered over by the 'chrome' and four more under the stand, but they aren't noticeable with anything in the bowl. Also, the 'rubber' ring around the bottom is somewhat loose and not overly well finished but, a tad of rubber cement inside and a small snip-snip on the loose material will take care of that. And, the bowl helps create great lather! I used it with a D.R. Harris Lavender cream and it whipped up nice and thick and rich, that is both a reflection on the cream and the design of the bowl. If you get this bowl you won't regret it!

The product arrived as indicated and is OK for my needs. It's not Burma Shave, who discontinued production of their shaving bar soap. Marvy requires you to buy 12 bars at a time, as a minimum order, which should last me about 7 years.

A girlfriend gave me one of these as a Christmas present. It's great - so pretty you don't even want to use it. But I did and it lasts forever. I also think guys would like this soap - substantial and really looks like rock or sculpture. Smells great too!

Shaving Shave Set "Mach 3" Razor Badger Brush w/Stand on Soap Dish Review

Shaving Shave Set Mach 3 Razor Badger Brush w/Stand on Soap Dish
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a nice aluminum brush and Mach 3 razor set with a just the right size bowl that is also the base.
The brush is pretty damn good quality badger hair. I was actually pretty surprised by the quality of the bush While it is a smaller brush it does a great job of making good cream in a quite short time. I use the cheap glycerin based Van Der Hagen shave soap from Wal-Mart and it does a great job with that. Just remember if you are going to use something like you'll need to kind of mash the brush on there so that it will actually fill the brush a little more as using just the tips doesn't work too well with them
The mach 3 razor handle is nice but I don't use it. I took a dremel to that side and widened it up a little so that my Merkur Futur razor fits on that side.
The bowl is nice but it's small so you don't get all that much shaving cream in there when you are getting it ready, so if you don't need to do more than one or 2 passes then it's not a problem to use the bowl, you'll get just the right amount for that. If they reintroduced this same set with a bigger base/bowl I'd buy it in a minute, but for now this set will do just nicely.

Herban Cowboy Shave Soap ,Dusk Review

Herban Cowboy Shave Soap ,Dusk
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I often just buy new soaps just to try them since, I already have a line of soaps I really like(Van Der Hagen) usually $1.00-1.60. Most of the other brands just have a stronger scent that I like but do not shave as well, then I just take a VDH Glycerin and melt them together and get the best of both worlds. The Herban Cowboy soap smells nice and lathers well till you get to lathering the other side of your face and it all disappears (foam less, no glide, worthless). I never return anything but this one is going back since, I can't support suck a bad product. In case you were wondering I used it with a silvertip badger brush and a boar brush to give it a fair shot. I also tried different blades Personna being my favorite with my Merker barberpole razor.

Van Der Hagen Natural Boar Shave Brushes (Pack of 3) Review

Van Der Hagen Natural Boar Shave Brushes (Pack of 3)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having rediscovered the art of shaving (nothing else really compares!) it is only natural that you will soon search for quality shaving brushes. Badger is certainly better than boars plus there are those beautiful handles and other considerations that make a shaving session feel like a luxury...however, like any type of grooming product they tend to get a lot of use and may have hygenic concerns. These inexpensive alternatives are of a decent quality, durable enough to last years but inexpensive enough to take along when traveling or just toss away should you feel the need for new/cleaner brushes. Also an excellent option for those new to the shaving experience and unsure if they want to invest top dollar into more expensive options. Gets the job done right without the high price.

Brush is of good quality, and I particularly like the handle a lot, however I find the brush is a bit scratchy and floppy, i.e. it splays a lot when loaded with foam.
Good brush but better are available for the same price range.

altho it makes a nice lather the pine aroma is too strong for facial use. Ive relegated this soap to the tub collection. for the body as a showersoap, the smell is tolerable.

Van Der Hagen Select Shave Soap, 2.5-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 12) Review

Van Der Hagen Select Shave Soap, 2.5-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 12)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not just with the soap itself, mind, but with the deal. Shaving soaps, assuming one shave each morning, can last a couple of months before you need to throw a new puck into the shaving cup. If you assume about 2 months per puck, and this comes in a pack of 12...well, you see where I'm going with that. That's a GREAT value. It can be argued that shaving foams and gels last nearly as long, but the difference with shaving soap is how it works on your skin. Shaving soaps usually have special moisturizers that provide for a smoother face than regular shaving foams or gels. Also, the lather is not nearly as thick, so a lot less actually goes down your sink.
A little trick for you: Fresh out of the shower, apply baby oil to the area to be shaved, then apply the shaving soap with a shaving brush in against-the-grain strokes, like you're painting. I say baby oil instead of preshave oil because baby oil does three things: soften the skin even more, help keep the hairs in place for an easy shave, and seems to help keep the lather from running or dissolving too fast. I do it every morning and the end result is a much closer shave with less blade snags.
I've tried the generic Williams Mug soap sold at CVS, the Colonel Conk brand, and now this - and I can say the Van Der Hagen brand lathers the absolute best. It's thick without being "foamy", and applies very nicely. Don't let others who tell you "just use bar soap" fool you. You can shave with bar soap, yes...but shaving soap lathers quite differently from regular soap.
Good stuff and well worth the purchase. It's basically a dollar and some change per - which is comparable to other soap brands - but it performs like more expensive types. Mix it with a hot towel treatment and you'll be in shaving heaven.

Scalpmaster Wood Handle Shaving Brush * Boar Bristle #sb-15 Review

Scalpmaster Wood Handle Shaving Brush * Boar Bristle #sb-15
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered large quantities of these brushes for shaving kits and was rather disappointed. The brown on the bristles is zig-zag airbrushed on very sloppily and was on the metal ring as well. Worst of all the brushes are branded "Scalpmaster MADE IN CHINA" on the front of them which is deceptively not shown in the picture. The bristles stay in well however about 1/5 of the ones in my order the metal popped right out of the base and had to be glued back in. Bristles are also among the stiffest we have encountered.

Van Der Hagen Men's Dual Action Bar Soap, 5-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 3)
Average Reviews:

I have never been one to think about soap but I am a Bar Soap guy. I hate all those liquid soaps you can wash everything with because they are so generic and fruity smelling. This soap feels great on the skin and provides a great shave experience. Just wet your hands, roll the soap around a couple of times and massage into the stubble.
It has a great smell. Clean, Fresh and manly. I am having trouble describing smell but buy some and try it. All I can say is I am 46 and have been shaving since 15. This is damn good soap so do yourself a favor and try it.

Alpen Secrets Orange Mandarin Glycerin Soap, 3.67-Ounce (Pack of 4) Review

Alpen Secrets Orange Mandarin Glycerin Soap, 3.67-Ounce (Pack of 4)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hmmm, how do I review a soap. Here goes (based on the things I look for in a soap)
1. Smell - Mild citrus smell, not very strong
2. Rinses Away - Seems to rinse off easily without residue (we have fairly hard water though)
3. Bar lasting time - Bar seems to dissolve fairly quickly compared to other glycerin soaps, but this probably attributed to its lathering characteristic.
4. Lathering - This one is probably one of the better lathering glycerin soaps I've tried.
5. Cleaning Ability - Haven't had any problems getting dirt, oil, or anything else off.
One last tip that I have for glycerin soap users is rather than throw the bar away when it gets too small to effectively use, just get it and a new bar nicely warmed/lathered up and stick the two together and let sit until the next day and it effectively give you the ability to use 100% of the bar with little/no waste.

Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Hard Shaving Soap Refill, 3.5-Ounce Review

Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Hard Shaving Soap Refill, 3.5-Ounce
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ten years ago, I followed an Englishman's advice and scraped the can. Rather than continue to suffer the itchies from chemical-suds and running out on half a face, I move to grown-up shaving gear. I bought a cheap mug, a cheap brush, and a bar of Colgate shaving soap. After a few years of trial and error, I now have a good sandalwood bowl, an excellent badger-hair brush, and buy only the best shaving soap. I'm pleased to say Taylor of Bond Street is equal, if not superior to Crabtree and Evelyn. Further, C&E seem to be on the verge of scraping their men's line. All the more reason to try this great product.

Van Der Hagen Premium Shave Set (Soap, Bowl, Brush) Review

Van Der Hagen Premium Shave Set (Soap, Bowl, Brush)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Got this kit for about $8.50 at a Wal-Mart.
And, considering the price, its an awesome value.
Here's the thing about brush shaving, its really nice. It feels good on your face, it results in a nice close shave, and its honestly kinda fun to do it the old school way.
The bad part is, you go on the internet and find out that there's a super elite group of people who will tell you that THIS brand of shave soap is the best soap and you should only use THIS brand of badger brush because the other types don't compare and how you can only use THIS kind of razor because the other kinds will somehow destroy your face and make shaving the kind of unspeakable horror only sick, twisted people dare entertain their minds with.
The point I'm trying to make is this: there is actually a community of shaving snobs. People who've actually invested over a hundred dollars in particular, elite equipment to SCRAPE LITTLE HAIRS OFF THEIR CHINS!!!!
So they see this cheapo set and turn their noses up at it, because its ONLY EIGHT DOLLARS and you can BUY IT AT WAL-MART!!!I do like wet shaving. Its a good shave. I shave with a double edge safety razor (a Merkur) and this particular kit. And it works out GREAT!!!So here's my review:
THE BRUSH: Its a boars hair brush, and its fine. It lathers well, it works the way it should, its not rough on my face at all. Yes, it has a plastic handle. WHO CARES?!?!?!?! Its the HANDLE of a friggin BRUSH!!! Do your hands start on fire if they touch plastic? Do you get an allergic reaction if your fingertips handle a brush thats not metal or wood? If you answered "No" to both those questions, then you're fine. Complaining about the material of a shaving brush handle makes you a snob.
THE BOWL: Its a bowl. The soap sits in it, it holds steady when you lather. Its fine. You know why? Because its a FREAKIN' BOWL!!! How do you honestly complain about a bowl? It functions, it doesn't offend the eye, its fine. Don't be a snob.
THE SOAP: Honestly, I've tried so many canned shaving creams its ridiculous. I'm a man with sensitive skin and it doesn't matter how moisturizing the cream was, I still had nicks and cuts and irritated skin. So imagine my surprise to find this soap to be a key part of a very clean, enjoyable shave. I seriously get better results from this soap than I do with my gels and creams. Way to go, VDH shaving soap. Are there better shaving soaps? Probably. Do I care? No, because this one leaves my face moisturized and refreshed, costs 1.80 per bar, and I can actually get it without ordering it over the internet.BOTTOM LINE: A great wet shave kit, especially for the price. Avoid the snobby opinions and give it an honest shot. If you're not a total tool you'll probably be surprised by how nice this kit is.
There are plenty of things in this world where the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail make a huge difference. Guitars are such a product. Automobiles are another. Shaving brushes and bowls are NOT!!!
Don't be a dumb shaving snob, just go shave your face, then start investing yourself in something thats actually important.
