Proraso Eucalyptus Shaving Soap for Normal Skin 5.2 oz bar Review

Proraso Eucalyptus Shaving Soap for Normal Skin 5.2 oz bar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like this shave soap better than the 'pre shave cream' they make. Neither product offers much lubrication, but they both tingle your face awake.
The eucalyptus and menthol are very effective at opening the face for a shave. It smells a lot like Vick's, but will get you a closer shave than just soap. I find that if I put some of this and some of Col. Conk's soap (with glycerin) on my shaving brush- and face- I get the 'good morning' eucalyptus with a more satisfying lubrication.
I am not sure I'd buy this product again at $10 a jar.

GABELS Sta-Cool After Shave with Menthol 16oz/473ml Review

GABELS Sta-Cool After Shave with Menthol 16oz/473ml
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned and used several of the Gabels after shaves over the years. For a brand that is just about always the cheapest around for the quantity you get, I have found them all to be amazingly strong, pleasantly scented, and long lasting. This menthol blend is no exception. Its a refreshing, heavily mentholated mix similar to Aqua Velva, but a whole lot cheaper. This stuff really does last a respectable amount of time considering the price is incredibly cheap compared to Mennen skin bracer, or Aqua Velva. I buy two 16 oz bottles at once to make the shipping worth it, and then I am supplied for months. I highly recommend the Gabels menthol, as well as all the other blends. Its the best deal around in a cheap after shave...

Crabtree & Evelyn Nomad Shave Soap in Wooden Bowl 3.5 Oz Review

Crabtree and Evelyn Nomad Shave Soap in Wooden Bowl 3.5 Oz
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was the second soap I purchased after switching from canned junk to real shave soap/cream. This is without a doubt the best smelling soap I've found. Something like a warm fern with a slight woodsy smell. Not overpowering, but rich and smooth. Smell 'out of the box' is a little different than what settles in after its been exposed to air for a while, and that makes it even better. Compared to L'occitane Cade and D.R. Harris Marlborough, this smells better, but I had not used it in some time as it did not appear to be as cushioning. A year later, and likely with the development of a more skilled hand on my part, I've began to use it again, and have gotten some very nice shaves from it with NO irritation, which is kind of a big deal for me. Top quality product, nicely packaged, lather's relatively easily. If your interested, purchase.

Col. Conk Almond Glycerine Shave Soap 2.25 oz Review

Col. Conk Almond Glycerine Shave Soap 2.25 oz
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Since I started DE Shaving I have been working my way through various shave soaps and creams and testing them out along the way.
This is a very simple, straight forward product, so I will keep my review short and simple.
1. Lathers well
2. Soothes the skin, thank you Glycerine. No big ingredients list from the Col. thank you!
3. Smells very masculine, the Amber scent is a great blend that does not linger. Old school Barbershop smell, understated and not loud.
4. This is a great place to start if you are interested in old school shaving.
5. Inexpensive, and a great value, perfect step up from Williams Mug Soap. The next level.
6. A few of the old school guys on Badger & Blade keep this in rotation, so it goes from beginner to expert. It is in my rotation.
I would recommend this product to anyone interested in old school shaving routines, you can't really miss with the Colonel when you are looking for a great value shave soap.

Proraso Shaving Soap with Aloe and Green Tea - Ultra Sensitive Skin Hair Removal Products Review

Proraso Shaving Soap with Aloe and Green Tea - Ultra Sensitive Skin Hair Removal Products
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used a few shaving soaps over the years with mediocre results but this one really surprised me. It lathers very well and really protects my sensitive skin. I've used it several times and always with good results. It seems to work a tiny bit better than the Van Der Hagen Glycerin Soap, which is also a great soap and quite a bit cheaper. These two soaps however are light years ahead of the Williams Mug Shaving Soap which I find to be pretty poor. I even prefer this shaving soap to a few of the many creams I've tried. Definitely give this soap a try.

Bluebeards Revenge Shaving Cream Review

Bluebeards Revenge Shaving Cream
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you've never used a glycerin based shaving cream before, you're really missing out. This cream with a Silvertip Badger Bristle Shaving Brush and Bluebeards Revenge Post Shave Balm gives me the best shave I've ever had. They describe the smell of this cream as that of a barbershop. I think it smells great and so does my girlfriend. Even if you're not a fan, it's not an aggressive smell. The lather it makes whips up quickly, is really nice and makes for a smooth shave. Going against the grain for me has always been a recipe for cuts and irritation. However, using this cream (and first going with, then across the grain, of course) I can get an amazingly close shave with no irritation. I can't speak to the effectiveness of the "decelerene" as I have only been using it for a couple of weeks. Even if it's marketing hype, this stuff is worth every penny. I would highly recommend this shaving cream if you want a close, comfortable shave.

Merkur Twin Razor Blades 5 Pack Review

Merkur Twin Razor Blades 5 Pack
Average Reviews:

Merkur twin blades are far superior to Gillette. They are sharper and have a cleaner edge. The lubricated strip does the job without leaving a slime on your skin like Gillette.
I am bald and shave my head daily. Merkur twin blades give the closest, smoothest shave I have ever had without knicks or scratches. These blades hold there edge. Highly recommended.

Crabtree & Evelyn Sienna Shave Soap in Wooden Bowl 3.5 Oz Review

Crabtree and Evelyn Sienna Shave Soap in Wooden Bowl 3.5 Oz
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Crabtree and Evelyn shave soap works extremely well. I have been wet shaving for over 2 years now, and this is by far the best quality shave soap that I have used. The soap lubricates my shave extremely well, and allows me to get a closer shave than the Col. Conk soap that I used before. It also leaves my face feeling soft and supple after use. The smell is similar to sandalwood, and leaves a light scent for about an hour or two after your shave. It also comes in a nice wood bowl that makes it easier to store and use that using a mug. All in all I highly recommend this product.

Shaving Shave Set "Mach 3" Razor Badger Brush w/Stand on Soap Dish Review

Shaving Shave Set Mach 3 Razor Badger Brush w/Stand on Soap Dish
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a nice aluminum brush and Mach 3 razor set with a just the right size bowl that is also the base.
The brush is pretty damn good quality badger hair. I was actually pretty surprised by the quality of the bush While it is a smaller brush it does a great job of making good cream in a quite short time. I use the cheap glycerin based Van Der Hagen shave soap from Wal-Mart and it does a great job with that. Just remember if you are going to use something like you'll need to kind of mash the brush on there so that it will actually fill the brush a little more as using just the tips doesn't work too well with them
The mach 3 razor handle is nice but I don't use it. I took a dremel to that side and widened it up a little so that my Merkur Futur razor fits on that side.
The bowl is nice but it's small so you don't get all that much shaving cream in there when you are getting it ready, so if you don't need to do more than one or 2 passes then it's not a problem to use the bowl, you'll get just the right amount for that. If they reintroduced this same set with a bigger base/bowl I'd buy it in a minute, but for now this set will do just nicely.

My wife is German and although we have lived both here in the USA and in Germany, my favorite bath soap is Speick. It has a clean almost antiseptic aroma that stays with you but doesn't overwhelm. When my last bar ran out this summer, panic ensued in our household. Thankfully, Amazon, the Internet and the small entrepenuer who works through Amazon quickly provided the answer. The price is a little high but well worth it to me and the delivery time is great. Highly recommended.

Feather Hi-Stainless Platinum Double Edge Razor Blades 30 Ct Review

Feather Hi-Stainless Platinum Double Edge Razor Blades 30 Ct
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Feather New Hi-Stainless is currently my preferred, "go-to" blade. While there are plenty of double edge (DE) blades I have yet to try, I have been able to try several other blades.
The Feather "wins" because of its sharpness. In other words, it is SHARP! If you have gotten your DE technique and face prep down, then this blade will not let you down. The flip side of that is ... if you are brand new to DE shaving or have not yet been able to achieve a smooth, nick-free and super-close shave, then beware. You may not yet be ready for the Mighty Feather. :) (Keep the styptic pencil handy!)
Some people say this blade, while extremely sharp, is not as smooth as some others and doesn't provide as many good shaves as it might. So far I have found this to not be true for me. I can routinely get 3 great shaves out of a Feather, and the 4th shave is at least very good, if not great.
As with all blades, your choice of razor makes a difference. In my Merkur 38C razor, this blade is the perfect choice. The Feather Portable is a lot more aggressive than the 38C, so my first shave with a Feather/Feather combination was not nearly as good or comfortable. It wasn't horrible, and I think I can now do better since I've had more experience with the Portable. But that said, if you use the Feather blade in a more aggressive or adjustable razor, take care with your technique and/or setting.
Update 2/13/08: As my prep has improved, I have discovered that the Feather is even better than my initial comments indicate.
First, as to longevity: Just for kicks I decided to see how many shaves I could get out of a single Feather blade. With meticulous face prep, I actually got TEN shaves out of one blade! I grant that the last few shaves were not as smooth and comfortable as the first several, BUT there were no nicks or cuts, and virtually all the shaves were superior to first shaves with some blades I've tried.
Second, as to smoothness: Better prep also has meant my impression of the Feather's smoothness has increased. At this point it is edged out by a whisker by the Gillette Stainless Platinum (aka "Swedes", though they're actually made in Poland), but the difference is not huge. And the Swede is just a bit less sharp than the Feather.
I am currently testing some Feathers that received cryogenic treatment. I'm not sure yet what that entails, but the cryo treatment kicks the Feather up a notch in terms of smoothness. It's not quite a Swede, but is closer. YMMV.

Merkur Model 180 Long Handled Safety Razor Review

Merkur Model 180 Long Handled Safety Razor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATED 6/27
OK.
So if you're here, it's either because (1) you're one of the old schoolers who recognized the brand and was looking for another razor like the one you had back when shaving was an art form, or (2) you're a young buck who has done studying and have heard the recent hype: That straight razors and safety razors are making a comeback.
Unfortunately, I can't speak to the 1st audience, because I wasn't born when Merkur was made popular. I can, however, speak to the 2nd audience, as I somewhat fit into that category.
First some history. I'd been a Gillette man for the longest time. I had the old Mach 2 Turbo, then the Mach 3, then the M3 Power, then the Fusion. Yes, I've wasted a lot of money, between the handles and the replacement razors. I'd estimate it to be in the $1,000 range. Well, as you can probably understand, I didn't want to spend that money on razors anymore, plus I'd read stories that the straight and safety razors of old times are supposed to be better for your shaving area than the newer razors with multiple blades and lube strips, mostly due to the frequency of razor burn. So I decide to pick one of these up.
Just so you know, I use (and recommend) various shaving products, listed as follows:
- Proraso Shaving Soap with Eucalyptus Oil and Menthol - Normal Skin 150ml/5.2oz - I use this now. Very good lather, good smell, a bit expensive and a tad difficult to rinse out of the razor if you don't give it enough water.
- Proraso Pre and Post Shave Cream - 3.6 oz - I use this now. Makes the blade glide over the skin when applied as a base under the shaving soap. Increases the eucalyptus smell and gives a cooling sensation to the face. Good stuff, small portion.
- Proraso Menthol and Allantoin Aftershave Splash - I use this now. Smells like a lighter version of BRUT which was disappointing; I expected a light eucalyptus smell. Seems to do pretty good at smoothing the skin, nice texture, but nothing special.
- Van Der Hagen Select Shave Soap, 2.5-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 12) - I use this now. Great value for the price, solid soap, lathers thick, but you have to have the right ratio of soap to water, so it's not too runny.
- Col. Conk World's Famous Shaving Soap, Almond * 3 - Pack * Each Net Weight 2.25 Oz - Great smell, applies smooth, but doesn't lather quite as thick as I prefer. Also I found it had basically tarnished the inside of the soap cup over time. Not a big deal, just something to consider.
- 100 7a.m. Platinum Double Edge Safety Razor Blades - Excellent value, they don't last long...the idea is to buy so many that it doesn't matter if they don't last that long. I can get between 1 and 2 weeks use out of a single blade; so you figure between 1 and 3 years without having to buy more.
- Shaving Gift Set with Merkur Safety Razor, Bowl, Shaving Soap, Badger Brush, Stand and Safety Razor, Great Fathers Day Gift - Bought for myself, the brush is good, and I gave away the small razor that came with it. It's not the top of the line but it'll do.The first thing I noticed about this little ditty is that it's easy to clean. If you're like me and you shave using a running faucet of warm/hot water, you'll be right at home and pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to clean. One thing to watch out for - because it's all metal, it holds in the heat VERY WELL - so you'll not want to use full heat or I guarantee you'll burn yourself something fierce.
Second thing I noticed, and quite notable, is how easy it is to replace the actual blade. Just unscrew the handle, lift off the bottom, replace the blade, replace and screw back on. Never easier. Speaking of the blade, the instructions don't tell you how frequently to replace the blade, but online some people state to replace it once a week. That seems a bit frequent to me if you're just doing maintenance shaves once a day. Some with rougher beards I can understand, but mine is not nearly that bad - and mostly maintenance from previous shaves. I would say - change it when it feels like it's starting to snag easier than you're thinking it should. The biggest things to keep in mind: lather, lather, lather, and keep the blade wet.
I saw a few people were cutting themselves with this razor. I haven't cut myself and I've used it quite a bit. The two main causes of cutting oneself are incorrect angling and too much pressure. Because this is a razor with no plastic guides to protect you, it means you have to go slower, be more careful, and master the art of shaving the way it was originally intended. Not for nothing though - you just need to practice control. Also, you can't hold this razor like the older ones, you really need to hold it with graceful fingers; the lighter you hold it the less tempted you'll be to press down when you're shaving. The angle also matters - it shouldn't be held like a squeegee, it should be held at roughly a 30 degree angle. The combination will effectively leave it up to the blade to do the cutting, not your strength (or lack thereof).
I did notice that this blade can get insanely close. In fact, just to test, I shaved with my old Fusion razor and felt my face; I could feel follicles, but then I shaved right after with the Merkur, and it actually got hair that the Fusion didn't. Additionally, I had some razor bumps on my neckline, not too large, but still visible, no matter how frequently I shaved. Since shaving with the Merkur, some of these have disappeared entirely. I also follow up my shave with an all-over astringent due to oil issues, and normally it's a crazy burn after shaving, but after shaving with the Merkur there's no burn whatsoever. Definitely a positive change from what I used to experience, trust me.
Some added information: you want to make sure your face is clean before shaving. I say that because the oils and dirt on your face can contribute to razor bumps and poor shaving quality. The cleaner the better. In my case I use some shower cleaners that work extremely well, but just make sure your face is clean with whatever you choose to use. Also, to improve the quality of the shave, I apply a bit of baby oil to my still-wet face, then the shaving soap lather on top of that. Helps the blade move smoother across the skin and makes it feel baby smooth. Some other items are body oil (Vaseline has two good ones, cocoa butter and aloe vera) and and certain pre-shave oils. Everyone's physiology is different though; do whatever is comfortable for you. I'm just adding this here for ideas.
In short, if you're tired of paying $20-$30 for blades that claim to last a month yet last a week or two...if you're wanting a closer, more comfortable shave with little-to-no razor burn...if you want to experience what the old schoolers have been talking about, definitely try a Merkur.
I wanted to throw in a bit here as I see more and more reviews from people who just don't get it. Merkur is all about the quality of the shave, not the speed. I don't know how many times people need to express that, but if you do your research you will find numerous people saying the same thing - this razor is NOT for those who just want to speed through their shave! You need to take your time and not rush through it. You WILL cut yourself if you rush with this razor. You WILL NOT get a quality shave if you don't take your time. You WILL wear down the blade if you dry shave, and this blade WILL NOT protect you. If you're going to use this razor, take the proper precautions. If you know you're a speed demon shaver, DON'T BUY THIS, because I really don't want to see you up on here complaining that you have to take your time.

My husband's ancient sterling silver razor finally gave up after many years of toiling away on the beard. I searched everywhere and finally found this beautiful set that organizes razor, brush and soap in such a lovely way! I keep it out because it looks so chic and, certainly, having everything together makes for less mess. As sturdy as it is beautiful, he'll be using this for a long time to come. Now if I could only find something to clean off those whiskers in the sink!

Musgo Real Lime Glyce Soap Review

Musgo Real Lime Glyce Soap
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The other reviewer made a mistake here; this is not a shaving soap, it's a pre-shave soap; that is, you're meant to wash your face with it, then rinse, and THEN use a shaving cream or soap. This is not for lathering in a mug. What it DOES do is clean your face and prepare your beard so that your shaving cream or soap will be more effective; in this regard it is excellent, and you should try it; it lasts forever as well.
